Stone Veneer Column Wrapping in Miami, FL

One of the fastest curb appeal upgrades available — porch columns, entryway pillars, and structural posts wrapped in natural or manufactured stone.

Miami Stone Veneer Specialists wraps porch columns, entryway pillars, carport posts, and structural supports in stone veneer throughout Miami, FL. Column wrapping is one of the highest impact-to-cost curb appeal upgrades for Miami homes — four columns at a front entry can transform the look of the entire facade without a full re-cladding project.

Column wrapping in stone is more technically demanding per square foot than a flat wall application. The reason: columns have four visible faces, internal and external corners on every face transition, and often a capital and base condition at the top and bottom that need to be detailed cleanly. Every corner needs either an L-shaped corner piece, a mitered joint, or a bullnose edge piece, depending on the stone profile and aesthetic. Done wrong, corners look chunky and unfinished. Done right, the column looks like solid stone rather than a veneer wrap.

We wrap three substrate types: CBS (concrete block and stucco) columns, which is the most common in Miami; wood-frame columns that were originally built for paint; and metal structural columns on modern or industrial-style homes. Each substrate gets a different attachment method. CBS columns get a scratch coat applied directly. Wood-frame columns get moisture barrier, lath, and scratch coat. Metal columns get rust-inhibiting primer, then cement board or lath and scratch coat depending on the column dimensions.

For exterior columns within a few miles of the coast, we use a penetrating sealer appropriate for salt-air exposure. Columns are fully exposed on all four sides, which means more surface area for salt deposits to accumulate — sealing is even more important on a column than on a flat wall section. The sealer re-application schedule in a coastal location is every 5–6 years rather than the standard 7–10 for inland properties.

Popular Stone Choices for Columns

Florida Keystone and coral stone are the classic choices for Miami entryway columns — consistent with the historic architecture of Coral Gables and the Mediterranean Revival style that defines a lot of Miami's older residential neighborhoods. If the home already has Keystone elements, we match them. If not, new Keystone columns can anchor the look. Honed limestone is the modern alternative — cleaner, more contemporary, works with both traditional and modern architecture. Ledger stone gives columns a more textural, organic appearance that works well on Mediterranean and Spanish Colonial-style homes.

Column base and capital details — the wider sections at the bottom and top of a column — are where the project gets interesting. Traditional base profiles use a wider course of flat-faced stone to define the transition. Contemporary approaches keep the same profile from top to bottom with a simple cut at the ceiling or soffit line. We discuss these options during the estimate visit and can show photos of both approaches.
